The ultimate musical duo, Michael Ball and Alfie Boe are ‘Back Together’ and will delight cinema audiences up and down the country with the final show of their UK tour at the O2 Arena. Hot on the heels of their star turns in the West End’s phenomenally successful staged concert of Les Misérables, Ball and Boe’s sensational voices and irresistible chemistry will light up the big screen.
To celebrate St David’s Day 2020, we took a drive down the M4 and over the Severn Bridge to St David’s Hall in Cardiff. Joining the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales was the folk band Calan and Cardiff Singer of the World Song Prize finalist Angharad Lyddon. Simon Smith from BBC Radio was on the faders of Spiritland One and the whole show was broadcast live on BBC Radio Cymru and BBC Radio Wales. Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus!
After receiving a call from specialist music agency DLMDD, Spiritland Productions were more than happy to provide a full solution to record the English Session Orchestra in one of London’s finest venues, LSO St Lukes. The brief was simple – to record cuts for an advert to picture with a 35 piece orchestra on location but with all of the facilities you would usually have in a recording studio.
With Spiritland One parked outside and our SSL SB32.24 preamps patched up in the hall, we provided 35 ways of wireless click track for the musicians, 10 ways of wired headphones for the client, HD picture playback for client and conductor, a collection of high quality orchestral mics from Neumann, Schoeps and DPA, wireless Riedel talkback for the conductor and a lot of quality coffee.
Once the morning recording session was finished we derigged the hall in under an hour which allowed the client to book a half day session rental, something not usually available in a commercial studio. We then spent a few hours in the truck tweaking the mix with the client and composer and provided final mixes and stems to the post house. All that was left to do was to pull the power and drive on to the next job!
Rohan De Livera, Composer said: “Spiritland came to the rescue when we needed an orchestral session for a recent TV project and found all of the traditional London studios unavailable. Spiritland One made LSO St Lukes and its beautiful acoustic our studio. They gave me exactly the sound I asked for. Their team was at the top of their game throughout set up, recording, and mix-down.”
Spiritland Productions were thrilled to work once again with the London Musical Theatre Orchestra, this time producing the debut live album from Lucie Jones (X Factor, Eurovision, West End). We worked closely with the Adelphi Theatre and PA provider Autograph to ensure the best possible capture on the night using our fully redundant MADI derig recording kit, Digico SD Preamps, an SD7T and the best possible microphones from Neumann, DPA and AKG. A Schoeps audience array was provided by Spiritland Productions and Lucie’s vocal was handled by a DPA 2028 capsule with Shure Axient RF.
Multitracks were then transferred to Spiritland One and over two days at our base in Lingfield we worked with Freddie Tapner (Conductor, LMTO) and Lucie making final edit decisions before Rich Andrews mixed the final tracks on our SSL System T S500 utilising outboard from Bricasti and Lexicon and monitoring courtesy of our Barefoot MicroMain27 loudspeakers.
Final mastering was also handled by Spiritland Productions with a Red Book Standard 44.1 master supplied as well as separate ‘Mastered for iTunes’ files.
When Scala Radio wanted to broadcast the annual Nordoff Robbins Christmas Concert from St Luke’s Church, Chelsea they asked Spiritland Productions to provide the facilities. With Alfie Boe, Danielle de Niese and Alexis French as well as the church choir in attendance Spiritland One was used for the audio mix.
